Evert Beijer
More About Evert
Born in The Netherlands, Evert Beijer was one of five children who grew up on a mixed farm containing chickens, pigs and cows. At a very young age, he started helping on his parent’s farm and developed a passion for dairy. Although he preferred dairy, when he was fourteen, Evert started renting his own chicken barns. He started with selling eggs and later switched to raising chickens.
After he graduated from high school, Evert worked in bridge construction for four years, until his father – in – law asked him to manage his dairy and hog farm. So, in 1988 he started managing his father – in law’s farm and married his wife, Jannie. They had two sons within the next two years.
After visiting family in Alberta in 1992, Evert and Jannie realized that there was much more opportunity for farming there than in The Netherlands. So, in 1993, Evert and Jannie made a bold move and started the immigration process.
In 1994, after everything was finalized, Evert and Jannie and their two sons moved to Alberta. Soon after they welcomed their third son. After working for other farmers for two years, in 1996, Evert and his wife were able to purchase their own farm and started raising hogs.Their family continued to grow within the next few years as they welcomed three daughters.
Although he put blood, sweat and tears into the hog farm,Evert’s dream was to be a dairy farmer. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that his dream finally became reality. After the first year of dairy farming, Evert stopped farming hogs to focus solely on the dairy. Starting with only 28 cows and wanting to expand, Evert partnered with a friend who leased him quota which enabled him to milkaround 100 cows.
In 2003, Evert was involved in a serious car accident which made it very difficult for him to be physically involved in the dairy. Before this, Evert did the majority of the farm work on his own, along with the help of his two older sons. As a result of his accident, however, his older sons took over much of the work.Evert and Jannie’s goal was to set up a business that their children could thrive from.
Since both of their sons were very interested in farming, and expanding the farm wasn’t economically profitable, Evert started looking for different options. Scanning through a dairy magazine, he found a cheese factory for sale in central Alberta. After a lot of consideration, Evert, with the help of a friend, decided to buy it.
They started building a cheese factory in April of 2005. On June 13th, 2005, they made their first batch of feta cheese with the help and guidance of the previous owner.Evert’s role in the cheese factory mainly consisted of management, supervision and sales. He worked very hard to expand his business by finding new customers and making the “Crystal Springs Cheese” brand known throughout Canada.
Today, Evert stays involved in the dairy and cheese factory by supervising and dealing with customers. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing and making steak. Additionally, he loves hanging out with his wife, kids, grandkids and his little puppy named Tarzan
Harvey Beijer
More About Harvey
Harvey was born and raised near Lethbridge Alberta, on his family’s farm, he was very young at the time his dad took over operations of Crystal Springs. But as part of the family he did end up working in the plant from time to time, Harvey was 13 when the family’s dairy barn burned down. The decision was made to re build. That’s when Harvey gained the start of many of his building and construction skills that he has today.
At the age of 14 harvey built a family guest house on the farm out of leftover building materials from the dairy barn they had just constructed. After some short-lived jobs in construction and landscapes, at 18, harvey took up a full-time job at the cheese plant with a few brief pauses for attending community college, and buying / renovating rental properties in both Alberta and Nova Scotia.
Today harvey remains very involved in the cheese plant and has been tasked with overseeing renovations of the cheese plant, as well as any new projects that come along. He also manages the truck that takes all of our product into Calgary, and has recently started to get involved in developing new products to launch into retail sales.
Aside from work harvey enjoys spending time and traveling with his wife Casha, riding his cruiser through the beautiful Rockies, and has taken on some big landscaping projects in his backyard! In his spare time you can often find his having a casual drink with a close friend, or hanging out at home with his wife and their little dog Mazie, Harvey and his wife support a few charities through their church programs and are active members of their communities.
Jacco
More About Jacco
Jacco was born in Ede, Netherlands. His family immigrated to Canada when he was 5, and they have been living in the Lethbridge area ever since. He was involved in the family farm from a young age, but never had a real passion for farming.
In 2005, when we assumed ownership of Crystal Springs Cheese, Jacco was 16. He became more and more involved in the cheese making part of our operation, and as each year went past his love for cheesemaking increased.
He started to look for ways to increase his knowledge, and in 2010 he attended the cheesemaking course, together with Sharilyn, at the University of Guelph. Whenever the opportunity arrives, he likes to shadow other cheesemakers, and learn new little bits of knowledge that help him to make cheese for his customers to enjoy!
Jacco’s job at Crystal Springs is running day to day operations. He makes cheese every day, and oversees and takes part in all the daily production work. Together with the production team, he ensures that every batch is made to the highest standards, and tasting just right. Occasionally Jacco will go on a sales trip or travel to investigate new equipment, but making cheese and satisfying customers is what he enjoys most!
Outside of work, Jacco enjoys spending time with the love of his life, Sharilyn, together with their 3 kids. The family enjoys traveling to the Netherlands, camping with friends and family, and just hanging out at their country home. Jacco and Sharilyn also like to help out at the Streets Alive Mission in Lethbridge, giving back to the community by serving the less fortunate.
